Request a teacher reference number for a national professional qualification

Use this service to get a teacher reference number (TRN) if you plan on taking a national professional qualification (NPQ).

Do not use this service if:

• you’ve forgotten your TRN or you’re not sure if you have one - use the Find a lost TRN service instead
• you need a TRN because you’re a mentor for a trainee or early career teacher - email mentor.trnrequest@education.gov.uk with ‘Mentor TRN request’ in the subject line instead
• you need a TRN for a different reason - find out what you need a TRN for

Before you start

You’ll need your National Insurance number (if you have one).

You’ll also need proof of your identity, for example a:

• passport
• driving licence
• birth certificate
• UK work permit
